Part 1: Conducting orthodox case studies

Introduction

Orthodox case studies are often portrayed, explained and discussed in a linear manner. While this is a simplification and there will be some overlap between components, the conduct of an orthodox case study is essentially undertaken in sequence. Following the illustrative example (see Box 4.1), we first discuss how to ‘review literature’ and ‘define research questions’. Next we consider how to ‘design [the] study.’ This is followed by advice on how to ‘prepare for study and collect data’. Within this component we focus on the use of secondary data, and the operationalization of semi-structured interviews, participant and unstructured observation and participant diaries.

Jem was interested in why people trusted and distrusted each other. She was particularly excited by how this impacted on those working in organizations. In one of her course lectures, she had been introduced to alternative theoretical models of trust and distrust; her lecturer referring to a review article by Guo et al. (2017). These theoretical models summarized three distinct views within the academic literature:

Trust and distrust are opposites and an absence of trust is the equivalent to distrust.

Trust and distrust are opposites but an absence of trust does not necessarily mean distrust, it is possible to be ambivalent.

Trust and distrust are separate dimensions rather than opposites, so it is possible to be both trusting and distrustful at the same time.
